Rineke Dijkstra is a Dutch photographer best known for her beach portraits. She photographed adolescents at the beach over a period of 10 years from all over the world. In the photographs the subjects look extremely awkward and clearly do not know how to hold themselves, possibly because they are at the age where they are transforming into an adult. I think this series of work is interesting as it focuses on the way the subjects present themselves in front of the camera. Most people will be able to relate to this because at one point or another, they themselves were also awkward teenagers.
Another series Dijkstra focused on club-goers where she made films of young adults in clubs in a temporary studio. I think this is more relevant to my series as the subjects seem to have developed a sense of style and know how they want themselves to be seen more. The subjects are more confident in themselves than the previous series as I think they are slightly older.
